Playing comfortably: text size, contrast and one-handed use

Device settings that make the site easier to read and easier to hold, without changing how any game behaves — plus what we build in so you do not have to.

Some of this is handled for you automatically, and some of it lives in your phone rather than in the site. This guide covers both, because the useful controls are split across the two and nobody tells you which is which.

Nothing here changes how a game behaves. It changes how comfortable it is to sit with, which is a different thing and often the one that decides whether you enjoy an evening.

What happens without you doing anything

Motion turns itself off. If your device reports a reduced-motion preference, decorative animation disables immediately. On lower-powered devices it disables on its own regardless of any setting. Why our homepage 3D turns itself off explains the checks behind that.

The layout is built phone-first. Tap targets are sized for thumbs and nothing scrolls sideways at any width from 320px upward — see what mobile-first actually means here.

Text is real text. Headings and body copy are not images, so your device’s text-size settings actually apply to them. That sounds obvious and is not universal.

If the text is too small

Device settings beat any in-app option: they apply everywhere, they are more capable, and an update cannot undo them.

  • iPhone — Settings › Display & Brightness › Text Size. For a wider range, Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Larger Text. Bold Text helps more than people expect.
  • Android — Settings › Display › Font size, and separately Display size. Display size scales interface elements rather than only words, which is often the one that actually helps.

For reading one thing without resizing everything permanently, use Zoom (iPhone) or Magnification (Android). Useful for a game’s feature list.

If contrast or colour is the problem

Both platforms offer an increase-contrast option and colour filters, including colour-blind modes for common forms of colour vision deficiency.

One design note worth knowing: nothing here depends on colour alone to convey meaning. Badges carry text, categories carry names and icons, and states carry labels. If two things look similar to you, read the label rather than trying to distinguish the shade.

Screen brightness matters more than any accessibility setting. Bright rooms wash out detail; very dim rooms make busy screens harder to read rather than easier. Match the room.

One-handed and reach

  • iPhone — Settings › Accessibility › Touch › Reachability pulls the top of the screen down.
  • Android — most manufacturers include a one-handed mode under Display or Advanced features.

By category, one-handed play works better in some places than others. Keno and instant games are fine. Fish tables and arcade titles genuinely want two hands and landscape orientation, because both involve sustained precision.

Sound

Everything is playable muted. Nothing essential is conveyed by audio alone, so turning the sound off costs you no information.

If you want atmosphere at a low level, headphones give better separation than the phone speaker does at a higher volume. Both platforms also offer mono audio, which helps if you have hearing loss in one ear.

Reducing what your device is doing

If the site feels heavy on an older phone, in order of effect:

  1. Turn on Reduce Motion. Biggest single improvement, and it removes the loading animation entirely.
  2. Lower the brightness. The screen is usually the largest power draw.
  3. Close background apps, which compete for the same processor.
  4. Update your browser. Old versions handle modern layout features poorly.

The mobile guide covers the data and battery side in more depth.

Comfort habits

Settings only go so far. These matter more than most people expect:

  • Look away regularly. Sustained focus at one distance causes most eye strain, not screens as such.
  • Support your arms. Holding a phone unsupported through a long session is a shoulder problem in the making.
  • Do not play in the dark at full brightness.
  • Take breaks on a timer — useful for comfort, and useful for other reasons covered in setting limits.

Common questions

Can I make the text bigger? Use your device’s text size and display size settings. They apply across the whole site because the text is real text rather than images.

How do I stop the animation? Turn on Reduce Motion (iPhone) or Remove animations (Android). The site also disables decorative motion by itself on lower-powered devices.

Is anything colour-only? No. Badges, categories and states all carry text or icons as well, so nothing depends on distinguishing a shade.

Can I play with sound off? Yes, completely. No information is conveyed by audio alone.

Which games work one-handed? Keno and instant games are comfortable. Fish tables and arcade titles want two hands and landscape.

Do these settings change the games? No. They change presentation only. Game behaviour is unaffected.
